18-year-old New Jersey native Nessa Barrett moved to Los Angeles less than a year after graduating high school in pursuit of who she always wanted to be but never believed she could become. That is, until she arrived at her first studio session in her new hometown in May of 2020. It’s not that she was new to music—it’d been there for her since she was a small child—so sitting down at the piano and walking away with an actual song felt both revelatory and, well, right.
